EDD says it’s begun implementing California auditor’s recommendations

California’s Employment Development Department has begun implementing recommendations by the state auditor.These all come from an emergency audit that the legislature approved last year. The auditor found a list of issues that the department needed to address, nine of them most important.Included in those was a requirement to identify fraud prevention and detection efforts it can adjust in times of high unemployment. The department is working with a vendor to fix that and says they will have it fully implemented by the end of June.EDD says they have worked on helping victims of identity theft who may have gotten incorrect tax forms, providing information on its website and setting up workers to address the issue. However, the auditor pointed out that EDD must continue to provide assistance in the coming months, saying it is “essential to maintaining full implementation of our recommendation.”As for the confusion between EDD and Bank of America in terms of fraudulent accounts being frozen, the auditor says EDD’s tracking tool still relies on multiple units in the department to manually perform actions to update their system.
