PHOENIX — A Glendale couple have been convicted of committing identity theft while operating an insurance consultancy business, according to a press release.

Cynthia and David Martin were charged with felonies for their involvement in an identity theft scheme between 2013 and 2014.

Cynthia Martin was sentenced to a year-and-a-half in prison on Jan. 8 for her role in the scheme, in addition to paying restitution of more than $700,000 to the victims of the couple’s fraudulent activities, the release said.

The couple committed the fraud while owning Executive Professional Insurance Consultants, when they used the identities of several businesses without their consent in order to finance fictitious commercial liability policies, according to the release.

They received money from commercial lenders that was meant to be used to pay premiums, instead using the funds to their own benefit while misappropriating funds for insurance customers.

The department asks that insurance customers only write out checks to the agency at-large.

More than $80 billion in insurance fraud occurs each year in America, according to the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud.
