Scam Jam Conference happening today in Meridian

MERIDIAN, Idaho — Fraud and identity theft is a major problem among older populations, so groups are teaming up to help them stay safe with a special event.

The Idaho Department of Finance is co-sponsoring Idaho’s 2019 Meridian Scam Jam Conference on Tuesday, May 28. The event is taking place at the Galaxy Event Center at Wahooz in Meridian. The popular conference will address a variety of topics including Medicare fraud, preventing financial and investment fraud, reverse mortgages as well as identify theft avoidance.

The Idaho Scam Jam Alliance is a coalition of non-profits and state agencies with the goal of educating the public with tools they need to identify and stay protected from fraud and identity theft.

Doors will open at 8:15 a.m. and the conference begins at 9 a.m.. The keynote speaker for the event is the Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden. The conference includes a complimentary lunch and refreshments. There will be a drawing for door prizes when the conference wraps up at 3 p.m.

Members of the Idaho Scam Jam Alliance that have joined together for the Scam Jam Conference includes the Idaho Department of Finance, the Better Business Bureau, SHIBA, Meridian Police Department, AARP and Idaho Legal Aid Services, Inc.

Attendees will learn how to recognize and avoid exploitation that could impact their financial future. Kristen Butler from the Department of Finance Securities Bureau will present “Investment Fraud: Tips to Avoid Becoming a Victim” during a breakout session. The department will also have a booth where attendees can receive free educational information on investments, mortgages, cyber-security and consumer finance.
